Science and the general population

One of the great problems with science and scientists is that the general public is exposed to very little of either on a regular basis.  They represent some abstract thing that people know is out there but that they assume they don't understand because "science isn't their thing".  Why does this need to be the case?  People need to be exposed to a regular diet of smartness to make them smarter and scientists need to make themselves available to the public, even if it is in an informal way...like this blog.  People need to understand that science isn't that hard to understand, if it is explained properly (admittedly a common shortcoming with scientists).  I don't need to know all the intricacies of astrophysics to understand the general workings of the universe, a little information can go a long way.

Science can be fun and educational without being hard, so sit back and relax and let us drop some knowledge on your cranium.  Who knows, maybe we can rival Bill Nye on the use of f-bombs in the name of science.
